So pumped to see that PlayJ posted that Beach House x Gone With The Wind youtube cocktail.  It’s so dope plus I’m taking it as a YouTunes blank check.  El Guincho, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson and El Perro del Mar provide soundtracks for a couple videonugs, after the jump (more…)

Hey Playtonics,

Last week our resident lo-fi mixtape mastermind Billy posted some advice on how to create an awesome audio/ visual experience. As he said, “I spend a considerable amount of time watching muted internet videos with music playing over top.” His suggestion in his post is listen to Magic Lantern’s “Dark Cicadas” while watching a muted video of Battle At Kruger. Great idea, right? So this got me to thinking, why don’t we exploit this hobby to make another semi-regular segment called “YouMash.” The basic idea is that we will post links to songs desgined to enhance/ add more depth to your YouTube video watching. And, what is Playtonic Dialogues if not a haven for shameless puns and clever wordplay. So on to my stab at YouMashing… (more…)

Hey Playtonics,

On Monday I posted my review of Datus’ EPs Masc, Fem, and Neut. If you haven’t already, give these albums a listen at their website. For this new segment titled “Getting to Know You”, I plan to give you all a closer look at emerging bands and artists.  I am always curious about how bands create their music so I would like to share my findings. Over the course of email correspondence, I’ve had the opportunity to ask questions to both Ezer Longinus and Trevor Williams of Datus. This week let’s get to know Datus…

I have to give it up for my fellow Bates alumni music bloggers at Cities of the Plain. Sam and Heavy D consistently post interesting tracks and observations which I highly recommend you check out. One recent post that caught my attention was for Childish Gambino, the rapping alter ego of  actor, comedian, and writer Donald Glover.

Hey Playtonics,

Yesterday I received the awaited and exciting news that I will be writing for the online music magazine Tiny Mix Tapes. Tiny Mix Tapes (or TMT) is a well established provider of “both up-to-date and dated news, reviews, interviews, and articles on different genres in the vast music world, including independent releases, major label releases, and even self-releases (via TMT’s Facebook page).” Since its establishment in 2001, TMT has steadily grown as one of the premier sources for music info on the web, and with a recently revamped site, it is sure to continue its climb to prominence.

I, under the moniker “Playtonic J”, will be writing for the Delorean section. Previously, the Delorean section used to solely consist of reviews for older music. However, with TMT’s redesigned website (and ethos?), the ‘Delorean Blog’ will now be a place where I can write about almost anything: track reviews, lists, Beatles conspiracy theories, etc. I am really excited for this opportunity and I plan to keep you all abreast as to what I write for TMT.

New Radiohead Songs and News!

Hey Playtonics,

Get ready for a fantastic week of Playtonic Ds! Today I posted a review of the emerging Brooklyn-based band Datus’ EPs Masc, Fem, and Neut, and my email Q&A sessions with the band will be posted later this week. Also, concert reviews for some of the most talked about indie bands around will be filtering in throughout the week. But first, some Radiohead news and a new song that you won’t want to miss…

Hey Playtonics,

Last week I introduced you to the Brooklyn-based band Datus. Since then I have had a chance to extensively listen to their series of EPs, Masc, Fem, and Neut, and correspond with band members Ezer “Fancy Pants” Longinus and Trevor “Care Bear” Williams (as Datus’ Facebook page jokingly refers to them as). This week I will post both my review of Datus’ three EPs as well as the Q&A I had with Ezer and Trevor in a segment I like to call “Getting to Know You.” First up, my review of Datus’ Masc, Fem, and Neut. Hey Playtonics,

What if I told you that hundreds of tracks, dozens of DJs, a number of clubs and events, in effect an entire sub-culture is based on one six second drum loop from 1969. Would you believe me? If your answer is no, go to this link. If you’re answer is yes, watch the following video by Nate Harrison to learn more about the most sampled drum beat in the history of recorded music, the Amen Break (credit to Winnie for sending me the link to this video).
