On a humid evening at the Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn, Animal Collective provided a cool, under-the-sea themed concert for its Saturday showgoers. As part of the Celebrate Brookyln! Benefit Concerts series, the Maryland born, New York based musical collective currently consisting of Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), and Geologist (Brian Weitz) played the second of two sold out shows on Saturday night. With a stage set up that would make the little mermaid feel at home, the band played in front of an undulating ocean backdrop complete with seafaring creatures (not to mention, jellyfish shaped string lights hung above the crowd). Perhaps as an homage to the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, midday through the show (or when the band played “#1” off of their record Strawberry Jam), a model shark lurked across the nautical set. All the while, two Pringles-can-shaped Aztec Jack-o’-lanterns with bowl cuts stood majestically on each side of the band. All this city talk! I felt the need to interject with some Maine. Since I’ve gotten back from Denmark two months ago, I still find myself having comparative thoughts all the time, especially concerning public space and transportation. But, if these dialogues are to be music focused, then I really want to bust my caps over this Danish band, Mew, who’s album, And the Glass Handed Kites, I’ve recently finally downloaded.
