Socrates was a good man. He would ask questions and then he would lead you to the answers. This sometimes enlightening, often times annoying practice gained him wide spread fame in his day. However, it is debatable whether Socrates would still be talked about today had it not been for his student Plato. Socrates did not write his philosophical musings. Our knowledge of the man, his life, and his philosophy is based on writings by his students and contemporaries; foremost among them was Plato.

Like this website’s namesake, I aim to create a written record of important questions. Playtonic Dialogues (shameless pun intended) is a meeting ground for ideas in music, philosophy, and the cross-section between the two. Why is this? Well, I majored in philosophy (specifically ethics), I am an avid music fan (sometimes a musician), and I am interested in how these two disciplines influence each other. That is, what can be learned from taking a philosophical approach to music and vice versa (whatever the latter might mean). This idea, like most, was conceived with the help of friends so please feel free to comment and contribute. If you would like to contact me regarding the site, email is the best way.

I’m no philosopher; my background is in politics, which means that I see the methodology of philosophy to be useful if it produces meaningful results for people and societies. Music is perhaps one of the most effective ways to communicate philosophy and the deeper things in life to as broad an audience as possible. In writing for Playtonic Dialogues, I hope to bring these concepts to light in a nuanced way that not only explicates, but motivates as well. Perhaps also relevant is that I am no denizen of the hipster/indie scene; my music is punk rock and metal, with a dose of classic rock and alternative.
