On freelance science writer Philip Ball’s website, the following is said about his upcoming book The Music Instinct: How Music Works, and Why We Can’Do Without It:
The Music Instinct offers the first comprehensive, accessible survey of what is known – and what remains unknown – about how music works: why we can comprehend it, why we are moved by it, why we make music and what roles it serves in culture and society.
Ball’s book joins a growing niche of science of music tell alls. McGill neuroscientsist Daniel Levitin wrote a similarily themed book titled This is Your Brain on Music The Science of a Human Obsession and co-hosted The Music Instinct, a PBS documentary on the science behind music. It seems that the books is only available on Amazon.co.uk and you can read the Economist’s review here.
