I thought I would share with you all a song that I have been playing nonstop today. “Kenya Dig It?” is a song by Ruby Suns, a trio from New Zealand, from their 2008 album Sea Lion. NPR Music describes this song in the following way:
“Kenya Dig It?” begins with a beat left behind by the previous track. Sunny synths and muted drumbeats dance with trumpets and flutes. But the most memorable feature of the song is the use of smaller found sounds in the background that evoke whimsy.
I saw the Ruby Suns open for the Dodos in October, however due to a word limit on my reviews, I did not cover their set. Looking back this was a poor decision because I really enjoyed their live show. I remember “Kenya Dig It?” being a highlight and my friend David Kelly commented that the drum sample in the last part of the song comes from a Phil Spector tune. Try to listen to this song without smiling. Can’t be done.
