In these dark, winter months one often calls up, for relief, thoughts of summer. A long walk through frozen streets is usually made bearable if it is but a temporary measure before bike rides and beaches. Escapism? Sure. But, how else can you cope with the bleak reality of frozen toes in December?
One way is to introduce Warm Weather by means of headphones rather than wishful thinking.
Amongst a talented group of musicians whom I came to know in college, Ryan Pollie always showed a knack for creating vocal harmonies and catchy melodies. For his senior thesis he created a sprawling album titled Snow Day under the name Shara, containing Brian Wilson-styled arrangements and short, poppy gems. And, after graduation, it seems Ryan kept the influences while jetting to a climate that matches his sound.
Warm Weather, comprised of Ryan, Brendan Lynch-Salamon, and Justin Lerman, moved to Hollywood from back east in a car “with all [their] instruments and recording shit.” At my request, Ryan gave the following background on the band:
I’ve been writing music with Justin since we were kids back in philly in a band called Cereal Heroes, while Brendan and Justin met at Dartmouth and played music together (mostly Who covers) and sang in the Dartmouth Aires. We have an albums worth of material that we’re currently polishing as we’ve only been together as a trio for a few months. We all sing and swap instruments (guitars, bass, keys, percussion, pretty much everything) and production duties, although Brendan is the true engineer in the group. A bunch of new songs have been written by the three of us since we moved out, but most of our material consists of songs Justin and I wrote last summer and we’ve reworked as a trio. The three of us are writing a movie with our roomate and director Ian Mcnabb who shoots our videos and tells us we’re cool and eventually we’re going to use our songs to create a soundtrack/score to the movie. All of the band members are also going to be in the film, which is cool. We’re going to keep releasing songs as we go, possibly an EP and we’re currently looking around for a good fit with an independent label. And yes, we do like the Beach Boys.
So, for those of you who retreat from the snow with hot chocolate and Pet Sounds, check out Warm Weather. The beach is only an mp3 away.
